Welcome to Issue 8 of Cape Wine News. South African wines continue to excel and excite in the UK, and we are delighted to be visiting shortly for the third time this year. There have been many highlights, including South Africa’s continued success in the Tri Nations Wine Challenges, the launch of our first two South African Wines under the Jones Family Collection, a weekend of Cape celebration at The Harrow at Little Bedwyn in September where over 25 Cape winemakers turned up and more importantly the continued increase in sales and interest of South African wines in our restaurant.
Our Road Show hits off later in December in Cape Town before we return to the UK for a short respite in mid January prior to heading to New Zealand to host the next leg of The Tri Nations Wine Challenges where South Africa compete against New Zealand.
Following last year’s exciting MCC v English Sparkling Wine Challenge, this January there will be two events to highlight the continued success of both Method Cap Classique in South Africa and Britain’s growth in producing World Class Sparkling Wine.
To see where South Africa and England stand on the World Map, we have brought together a selection of ‘Bubbles’ from around the World, these will be tasted blind and the scores will be evaluated to find the top 20.
Australia, New Zealand, Spain, France, Wales, England, Italy and South Africa will all be represented. Siobhan Thompson, the CEO of WOSA will oversee the proceedings together with an International celebrity guest list.
Pieter “Bubbles” Ferreira from Graham Beck and Michelin Star Chef; Roger Jones will host an exclusive dinner for 34 guests to highlight the quality and diversification of their favourite wines. Pieter recently visited numerous wineries in the UK and he will no doubt discuss why these have become so successful in such a short period of time and why they command such a high retail price.

South Africa v Australia
Australia are licking their wounds and are determined to give South Africa a real challenge, they have pulled out some superstar winemakers such as Louisa Rose (the Queen of Riesling), Ben Glaetzer (whose Shiraz have amassed amazing Parker top scores), the legendary Bruce Tyrrell from the Hunter Valley, a Pinot Noir from Tasmania that won this year’s Mamba Riedel Decanter Award for Best Australian Pinot, Larry Cherubino (past winner of Australian Winery of The Year) and a dessert wine from Rutherglen with 12 years of age.
As normal this will be a 6-course Michelin Star dinner overseen by Roger, with every course matched blind with two wines. Guests will vote after each round. Some 80 guests will decide whether South Africa stay at the top of the leader board or if Australia can mark their first win in the series.
The aim is to make wines with our favourite wine makers from around the World, and the first two were bottled this March following an arduous tasting and visit by the Jones Family to both Newton Johnson for the Pinot and Stellenrust for the Chenin Blanc. These were launched in the U.K. in September highlighted in numerous Trade Press.
